Time flies when you’re having fun!

Hello Readers!

Holy smokers can you believe it’s FRIDAY already?? AND can you believe that I have been Miss Red River Valley for almost 2 weeks now….umm I sure can’t! Do you ever have those moments where you make a lists of a million things to do…but you only accomplish like half of them? Well gang, that is me.

One of my many “To Do” lists

Since being crowned Miss Red River Valley I have been making connections, contacts, and plans of attending different events around the community. My GOAL as being Miss Red River Valley is to really get to know the community. I mean this side of the state is so diverse! There is agriculture, hunting, FLOODING, three different major universities, dozens of k-12 schools, and a lot a lot of “hutzba” (seemed like a good word…in my mind it means spunk).

But with so many things going on in the community and plans being made for different events, the only thing I am missing is TIME! Seriously..why can’t our days being 40 hours instead of 24?? I would benefit from that greatly. But as they say, time flies when your having fun…and I am having a lot of FUN!

Enjoying TIME 🙂

Speaking of fun…Halloween is less than a week away! Have you gotten your costume yet? I think I might be a cat or a zombie (pretty similar choices huh?). I work at Moxie Java that morning if you would like to come visit me and see what costume I chose! 🙂

Come try our salty caramel mocha at Moxie Java!

But considering I only have a short amount of TIME left before I go to work today, I should probably try and accomplish a few more things. I hope you have a safe and enjoyable Halloween! Talk to you soon!

Have you carved your pumpkin yet?

I am the new Miss Red River Valley!

Hello Readers!

I don’t even think words can describe how excited I am to be this year’s Miss Red River Valley! Being crowned was one of the biggest reliefs…I am now one step closer to making my dreams come true of becoming Miss North Dakota.

Crowning Moment

BUT the Miss North Dakota Pageant should not be the highlight of my reign as Miss Red River Valley. The JOURNEY to the Miss North Dakota Pageant is what matters the most. I have a little over 8 months to work my butt off promoting my personal platform of “Money Management Makes Cents” and learning more about what the Red River Valley has to offer the state.

So excited to be crowned!

Lucky for me, I will now have most of the state’s industries covered because last year I learned all about the oil industry and this year I will learn all about agriculture. I want to see those judges try and stump me now on North Dakota questions! 🙂     { knock on wood }

Miss WDAY?? Thanks for the support!

I want to give a big THANK YOU to everyone who came to the pageant to show me some support! Those hoots and hollers mean the world to me. Also a big shout out to my parents for transporting my dresses back and forth between Bismarck and Fargo…trust me, it is not an easy task!

Thanks for coming Jen! XOXO

My mom is the BEST!!!

Speaking of Bismarck….I FINALLY got to go home! I think this was the first time since before the Sweetheart Pageant in August. I checked a few things off of my “to do” list. I got my flu shot. Have you gotten yours yet?? AND I voted!! This a reminder to all of you college students…GO AND VOTE! Make your voice be heard! It takes no more than 10 minutes but the impact can be huge. (okay I’m done being that annoying nagging parent now). AND I also got to spend some time with my amazing boyfriend. He took me out to dinner and we watched a movie….I know ladies, I am pretty lucky!

Movie Night!

Well, my journey to Miss North Dakota 2013 is starting now! I am going to make the most of every moment and I will keep you up to date with what I am doing. Again, THANK YOU for all of your support and encouragement!

The will to win is nothing like the will to prepare

Hello Readers!

How great of a title does this blog have?? Okay like not to sound super nerdy but when I saw this quote on Pinterest, I  was like bah dah bing, bah da boom this is perfect for my title of my next blog!!!! The Miss West Fargo pageant is approximately 4 days away and that means 4 more days to get prepared.

How I prepare for a pageant is by:

My ways of getting prepared

1. Working out. I’m already a running fool but when it comes to wearing a swimsuit in front of a crowd I like to feel a little more toned in my arms and stomach. This past week I have been hitting up different workout classes like body pump and butts and gutts….and let me tell you, these classes kick my butt!! But in a good way..it is a good butt kicking 🙂

2. Staying healthy. Let’s face it…winter is pretty much here, and with winter comes the flu and different types of colds. YUCK!!! So in order to stay healthy I try to eat lots of fruits and vegetables and take extra vitamins the week before a pageant. This past week I have been eating a lot of spinach and different types of beans like chickpeas and navy beans. They are nutritious and fill you up! I am also a huge fan of herbal life shakes (nutritional shake). I’m not sure if they are actually as healthy as people make them seem, but they sure taste good! I’ve also been taking a daily vitamin and airborne. I’d rather be safe than sorry when it comes to my health!

3. Connecting my mind, body and soul. This can be said in so many ways. Basically when it comes to pageants, I really try to reconnect with myself. I take a deep look into my thoughts and opinions on different subjects. I also feel like my faith grows so much with each pageant. I reconnect with god and trust that the path that he has laid out for me is the right one.

4. Check out what’s going on in the world. This is pretty self explanatory, but make sure you know what is going on in your community and environment. For example, it is election time and I am sure that will be brought up in my interview. Although I am not a huge fan of politics, I have recently started to LOVE talking about them. They start heated conversations that I find entertaining! Bring it on in interview judges….let’s do this!

I watched the presidential debate on a big screen at MSUM

Alright gang these are just a few things that I like to focus on before I compete in a pageant. Now you know what I will be doing for the next couple of days…in addition to work, and school, and work, and school…..you know the routine 🙂

Again, thank you so much for all of your endless support and encouragement! I am a super lucky girl to have the support system that I do…even at the coffee shop I work at! A customer brought me in a good luck rose this last weekend…can you say North Dakota nice?? (Alright so Moxie Java is located in Moorhead so we will just call in North Central America nice) :). THANK YOU!!!

Moxie Java has the best customers!

Top 5 things I’ve learned this week…

Hello Readers!

Here are the top 5 things I have learned this week.

1. Fall is just Summer in disguise. It was 80 degrees earlier this week!! And you wanna know why it was that warm? Because I just bought a bunch of cute new fall clothes and that is just the way things happen. However, I will not complain about being able to wear shorts and flip flops a little longer. AND the nice weather makes it very enjoyable while admiring the beautiful leaves.

Beautiful leaves!

2. Be nice to someone, they will be nice to you. It amazes me how much a little smile or compliment can make someone’s day. This is why I LOVE working at Moxie Java. I meet all different types of people. However one thing is common with all of the people I meet, if you treat them with kindness and respect, you will definitely be rewarded. It’s awesome!

3. Enjoy the time you have with people. So many times I take people for granted. Sometimes I get caught up on focusing on the things that I need to get done. Key word “I”. It should not be that way. God puts people into your life for a reason and I need to keep reminding myself that. I especially need to keep this in mind with my boyfriend, Nick. We haven’t seen each other in almost over a month…which let me tell you, SUCKS! (We are both so busy with him playing football and I work ALL OF THE TIME). Not seeing him is going to make me cherish our time together even more. It also makes our skypes even more enjoyable because we take advantage of every minute. You are definitely a trooper for putting up with me, Nick 🙂

Nick and I

4. God would never give you anything you can’t handle. When the going gets tough you can’t just complain about being busy or wish things weren’t so hard. Life is tough. Life gives you obstacles and challenges and most of the time we can’t understand why? With each bump in the road we grow up a little bit…. and create some thicker skin. I know I would not be the person I am today without all of my screw ups….and for that I am so thankful they happened!

5. Learn to laugh at yourself. Sooooo I had one of the most emberassing moments happen to me yesterday!!! I totally ate dirt after falling off of my bike. Can you believe I fell off my bike!!? I mean come on Becca, 5-year-olds don’t even fall off their bike!! Okay so in an attempt to not make me sound so “loser-ish”, I had a good reason for falling off of my bike……I was carrying my coffee with me to class and my shoe got caught on my peddle which made me lose control and run into the curb, inevitably making me flip over my bike. (Alright alright so it was super embarrassing but also HILARIOUS!)  I think learning to laugh at myself makes the situation that much better. Most people would feel bad about themselves, but not this girl! I keep telling myself that God had me fall off my bike so I will have an embarrassing moment to share at my pageant interview next weekend. You gotta keep positive!

I didn’t get to enjoy my coffee!

So there you go, my top 5 things I learned this week, and I thought of them all while I was running this morning! But as for me now, I better get back to wrapping things up on my pageant paperwork and enjoying my time at Caribou Coffee.

Pondering over some coffee

Enjoy the nice weather we have while it lasts! Also, maybe think about a few things you have learned this week…I bet you would be surprised by what you come up with.

What makes you tick?

Hello Readers!

So this last year at the Miss North Dakota pageant I was asked for my final onstage question…”Now Miss Becca…what ticks you off, and what makes you tick?”. (But picture someone with a big southern accent asking this question…the judge was from Kentucky) :). And of course I gave some goofy response to the judge that when people ask me questions like this I get ticked off (I know, what was I thinking right??). HOWEVER he thought it was hilarious..PHEW!

Answering my on stage question

But my real answer had to do with running. Running honestly is what makes me tick. It is my “Becca” time. I usually start every morning with at least a 2 mile run. This morning was an extra beautiful morning. The air was crisp, there was no wind, little traffic, and the sun was just creeping up behind the horizon. I mean come on, can you say BEAUTIFUL!? Running and coffee. Those are the two most perfect ways to start my day.

FLASHBACK! An old x-country photo of me….

Speaking of coffee, I am just chilling at a coffee shop doing some homework right now. There is just something special about a cool fall day and a comfy coffee shop. Perfection!

Coffee shop chilling time 🙂

The next few weeks are going to be busy ones. Midterms are soon AND I am competing in another pageant in October!!! Yay! All I can say now, is running and coffee you better not let me down 🙂  I hope you enjoy everything this beautiful fall is giving us! I will keep you posted on my progress at getting ready for the Miss West Fargo pageant. As usual, any advice or pieces of knowledge you have…please share!

A recap of my time at the National Sweetheart Pageant…

Hello Readers!

WOW!!!! Where do I even begin? First of all I would like to apologize for not “blogging” while I was at the National Sweetheart Pageant. My host family did not have wifi so connecting to an internet source was a little tricky AND I was soooo exhausted every night that writing a blog would have been horrible. But man oh man  every moment of exhaustion was well worth it at the pageant. The memories, friendships, and experiences that I had during the week of the Sweetheart pageant are ones that I will NEVER forget.

Opening Number at the pageant

The week started off with my family and I DRIVING to Hoopeston, IL. (It is pronounced Huppston….say it from the gut, I learned this from the locals). But upon arriving in Hoopeston we toured the town a little bit…which took about 10 minuets, and than we went to the McDonalds and waited for one of the pageant officials to come and meet us. I say “us” because McDonalds is where I met my first pageant friend Jefra from Kentucky. We bonded quickly over the fact that we both were broadcast journalism majors (just like half of the pageant contestants ha).

Welcome to Hoopeston!

Hanging with the locals

After a few hours of waiting which didn’t seem to take too long because we were talking to the locals…a bus arrived with all of the other beautiful contestants. All of us got taken to a welcome dinner hosted by Miss Hoopeston herself, Abigail Foster or as I like to call her…sister bear :). At the dinner we received our sashes and got a quick pep talk about what the week was about. I had NOOOO idea what I was in store for!

Receiving my sash

What I did find out later that night was that I had the coolest roommate ever….Stacey Cook from Colorado. Not only is she drop dead gorgeous, but she has a heart of gold. We ended up staying up a little too late that night just talking and getting to know one another. I think we felt the lack of sleep the next day, but it was well worth it!

Stacey Cook, best roommate ever!!!

The next couple of days were full of appearances and tours of local businesses in Hoopeston. I learned everything from canning beans to harvesting corn and everything in between! We were treated like royalty at every place which was so cool!

Driving a tractor!

Modeling with my driver at the parade 🙂 HA

Another thing that I learned throughout the week was that I had the coolest host mom and sister!! Abigail Foster, Miss Hoopeston, and her mom Angie Foster are some of the MOST AMAZING women I have ever met. It was because of them that I stayed sain the entire week. Thank you mom for always driving me to get coffee, protein bars, and makeup. It is hard to believe that we got as close as we did in such little time. And thank you sister bear for always being that person to make me laugh. I will never forget all of the times we drove around listening to rap music…”rack city, rack rack rack city b****” 🙂 I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!!!

Mom, I love you ❤

I love you too sister bear ❤

Although I did not make it into the top 10 at the pageant I did win an award that I find to be just as good! I was awarded Miss Congeniality. If you are not familiar with the movie, Miss Congeniality is an award voted on by the contestants. It is a huge honor and I am so thankful to have gotten it. But more than the award, I am thankful for the entire week. I now have an even bigger drive to be Miss North Dakota this year! (If that is even possible). I am ready for the job and all of the responsibilities that come along with it. Lets do this!

Getting Miss Congeniality 🙂

As for now I am just attending classes again because they started back up and working…A LOT! But I like a busy schedule. It may be exhausting but God would never give me anything I couldn’t handle. (He must know that I like a challenge). I look forward to what the next few months have in store for me! Again thank you readers for all of your support and encouragement throughout the past couple of months. It means so much to me that you read my blog and comment!

Thank you for a great week Hoopeston…love, North Dakota’s Sweetheart! XOXO

Helloooo Chicago, my ideal spot to relax before the Sweetheart Pageant

Hello readers!

Well usually when I write this blog I am sitting a coffee shop of some sort (actually more like every time I write a blog I am sitting in a coffee shop….I have a coffee problem and I’m not afraid to admit it, but that’s another blog). BUT tonight I am actually writing this blog in the room of my “now 7 year old” niece. I say now 7 years old because it was just her birthday yesterday! Can you believe it…I have been lucky enough to be the aunty of this amazing girl for 7 years already! Wow! I am tucking in my little princess right now…which really means I am keeping her company until she falls asleep. This could be a while 🙂

Bed time

However I don’t really mind….I cherish every moment I have with my niece and nephew. They are the loves of my life! Erika, my niece, actually had her birthday party today and man oh man,  it was a great party! About a dozen girls showed up and they decorated shirts, picture frames, and bags. My sister is the best birthday planner ever (I would know….she planned a good handful of mine back in the day). Every girl in that room reminded me a little bit of what I was like when I was little. I can’t wait to see what they become some day…future politicians, doctors, lawyers, Miss Americas..ect. I know they will do great things!

The Birthday Girl

My nephew, James (wearing Erika’s crown)

The Big Hoopeston Pageant starts tomorrow….wooohooo! It’s something that I have been looking forward to all summer. I am so excited about meeting everyone and getting things started. I will try to write a blog every night to keep you up to date on how the week is going. Hoopeston has no idea what’s heading it’s way…..let’s do this!

I love my family ❤

Talk to you soon, XOXO

I leave for the Sweetheart Pageant…..TODAY!

Hello Readers!

Holy smokers, I cannot believe that I leave for the Sweetheart Pageant today! Now I know many of you may be asking what is the Sweetheart Pageant? Well the Sweetheart Pageant has been going on since the 1940’s. It was first called the “Miss Sweetcorn” pageant because Hoopeston, IL (where the pageant takes place) is the Sweetcorn Capital of the world.      Thank goodness I love corn on the cob! The pageant is very similar to that of Miss North Dakota meaning I will be competing in swimsuit, evening wear, talent, on-stage question, and interview. It is also a 3 day pageant like Miss ND, starting next Friday. AND ofcourse I will keep you up to date on how the competition is going and how the week is going!

Good Ol Hoopeston, IL

It’s so strange but I feel  very calm before the pageant. Usually I always get little butterflies (which I’m sure I will eventually), but today I feel at peace. Last night before I went to bed, I just had a little talk with God and asked him to let me have fun with the pageant and have him do whatever is best for me to serve him. I feel like with each pageant my faith gets stronger because I know that it is all in God’s hands. Knowing that he is there is a great feeling :).

God is always there…

Well gang, I work till 4:30 at the news station today and than my parents and I are hitting the road! It will be a good 13 hour car ride with plenty of bonding time. I can picture it now…my mom and I sitting up in the front seats singing with the radio and her drilling me with pageant questions…and my dad in the back seat saying in his { I don’t want to do this voice} “Becca I don’t want to ask you questions…I don’t know what type of questions to ask you” (even though he really does). Ahhh it’s going to be great!

Me in the newsroom…I need coffee 🙂

I will keep you all updated on my Journey to Hoopeston and how the week is going so keep reading! Also, if you have any tips/advice for me I would LOVE to  hear it! Keep in mind that this is a national pageant sooo if you have any great info/cool tid bits about why North Dakota is so awesome please share! You can comment under this post on Facebook or directly on my blog.

Talk to you soon!
